In episodes like the railroad boom and the dot-com bubble, creditors and shareholders were wiped out, because investment in a genuinely transformative technology outpaced any plausible near-term return. With the US financial system and asset markets having become a one-way bet on AI, such an outcome today could be catastrophic.

In that case, however, the implied labor-market dislocation would be without historical precedent. It is the coin-flip of nightmares: heads is financial instability, and tails is a biblical employment shock.

Bill Gates Warns A.I. Is More Dangerous Than Big Tech Will Admit
In an hourlong interview, he said his industry was downplaying the risks, which he believes include mass unemployment and bioterrorism.
On Wednesday, Mr. Gates published a nearly 6,000-word essay on his personal website laying out his concerns about A.I. and offering solutions, such as new taxes and bans. He said he was motivated to speak now because recent improvements in A.I. had far surpassed his expectations and because the industry had ignored technology milestones — like A.I.’s escaping the control of its creators or making recipes for bioweapons — that it once said would warrant more caution.
“They’re just full speed ahead and hoping that the good outweighs the bad,” he said.
Mr. Gates, 70, is the latest in a string of tech luminaries to call out the risks of A.I. as the industry spends trillions of dollars on new data centers, and as young A.I. companies edge toward some of the largest initial public offerings in history.

OpenAI Says It Has Cracked One of Math’s ‘Millennium Problems’
The company’s announcement is the most dramatic sign yet that artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming the field of higher mathematics.
OpenAI said on Tuesday that its newest artificial intelligence technology had solved one of the “Millennium Problems,” a collection of important unanswered math questions meant to push the world’s leading mathematicians to new heights.
The announcement is another clear sign that A.I. is fundamentally changing the upper reaches of mathematics, which have long been viewed as a pinnacle of human achievement. The change has excited some mathematicians, while stirring concern among others.
Over the past year, A.I. systems successfully solved a wide range of problems that have bedeviled mathematicians for decades. But these problems were not as complex, nor as closely watched, as the one that OpenAI’s technology has solved over the past several days. The Millennium Problems are among the most heavily researched in the field.

The AI Backlash Gets Professional
A new group is targeting tech companies and the government with the climate movement’s playbook.

(The Atlantic) If there’s one thing America seems to agree on, it’s AI. Some three-quarters of Americans oppose a data center being built in their area, three-quarters of Americans think AI will hurt their job security, nearly 70 percent think the technology is advancing too quickly—the polls go on. Progressive and Republican candidates alike are bashing the tech industry to win primary elections. States and cities are halting plans for data-center development. …
Silicon Valley’s growth is largely unencumbered by regulation, and President Trump’s administration has if anything used its authority to speed the AI industry along. The divide between these camps—the majority of people in this country who simply have to deal with the technology as it’s rolled out, and the much smaller population of people with direct influence over it—is a defining feature of this era. And so I noticed when a small group, with ties to both the Bay Area and Washington, started making noise, insisting that the AI race slow down and the technology be overseen not by executives and engineers, but by the broadest population possible.
The group—which formally launched today and calls itself Irreplaceable, as in people are irreplaceable by machines—has an audacious and perhaps naive vision. It is essentially a protest against capitalism as it is practiced in America today, focused on resisting first and developing a coherent plan for the future later.
… The organization is staffed with people who made a name for themselves in the climate movement, and they are hoping to avoid past mistakes by focusing on the emotional reaction Americans are having to AI, rather than anchoring their work in white papers and policy recommendations.
Phil Aroneanu, Irreplaceable’s executive director and a co-founder of the climate organization 350.org, told me he believes that climate advocates initially floundered because they acted as policy wonks. They thought that making evidence-based arguments about the dangers of melting ice sheets and rising sea levels to receptive congresspeople would be enough to pass nationwide climate legislation. Today, Aroneanu said, movements are built not necessarily on what people think, but instead on what they feel.
Irreplaceable will prioritize a range of issues: mitigating automation’s effects on the economy, protecting against government and corporate use of AI to surveil Americans, and establishing industry oversight and guardrails to prevent catastrophic disasters, such as widespread blackouts caused by AI-powered hacking or bot-engineered pandemics

Meta reaches $17 billion settlement with states in landmark trial over teen social media addiction
(AP) — Meta has agreed to pay $17 billion and add child-safety measures to its Facebook and Instagram platforms to end a landmark trial over teen social media addiction and settle claims filed by 47 states, state attorneys general announced Wednesday.
California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey were among 29 states that sued the tech giant in 2023, but the deal cuts short the trial, which was expected to see CEO Mark Zuckerberg take the stand before a jury in federal court in California.
The agreement is worth $353 million in Virginia alone and is one of the biggest in state consumer protection history, Attorney General Jay Jones said in a statement.
“For years, Meta intentionally deceived the public about the addictive and harmful design features that have wreaked havoc on youth mental health,” Jones said. The settlement “will put an end to these dangerous practices and deliver meaningful relief that will protect children from online harm.”

The AI debate has largely focused on productivity gains and job displacement, but its consequences will reach much further By revolutionizing how we combat disease, wage wars, and stimulate income growth, AI could fundamentally alter the terms of human existence.
(Project Syndicate) … AI promises to…[improve] both the quality and quantity of human life through preventive diagnostics, faster drug discovery, and more personalized medical care. In doing so, it could reduce the human and economic costs of non-communicable diseases like cancer and neurodegenerative brain disorders, including Alzheimer’s. It could also enable faster responses to outbreaks of communicable diseases by predicting where viruses are likely to spread and how mutations might unfold. In fact, AI is already being used to combat antimicrobial resistance. Perhaps most notably, AI could drastically reduce health-care costs, which have been largely immune to past technological advances. As a 2022 American Enterprise Institute chart showed, US hospital-service costs rose more than those of all other goods and services over the previous quarter-century.
Wars represent the second force that has repeatedly changed the course of human history. … AI is now ushering in a new era of technology-driven conflict as countries increasingly rely on drones and autonomous weapons. In Ukraine, drones account for 70–80% of battlefield casualties. AI-powered systems are also playing a growing role in the Iran war, from accelerating mine clearing in the Strait of Hormuz to tracking submarines and gathering intelligence.
… The third major driver of historical change is economic upheaval. … Early studies suggest that AI will supercharge productivity, particularly in knowledge-based industries, though evidence of its direct contribution to economic growth remains inconclusive. A 2018 McKinsey Global Institute report estimated that AI could add roughly $13 trillion to global GDP by 2030, while a 2023 McKinsey report projected that generative AI could deliver $2.6–$4.4 trillion in economic value annually.
Yet AI’s destructive potential is just as great. Warnings of an AI-driven “jobocalypse” have become increasingly common in recent years, with Silicon Valley venture capitalist Vinod Khosla predicting that AI will be capable of performing 80% of existing jobs by the early 2030s, rendering traditional employment obsolete.
Whether or not these grim predictions prove accurate, widespread job displacement could upend the structure of economies and societies. It could also greatly expand the role of the state, as governments face growing pressure to provide income support.

Trial for Meta begins with states arguing its platforms preyed on vulnerability of young brains
(AP) — Meta is once again on trial over dangers its platforms may pose to children. It is once again arguing that it works tirelessly to keep them safe.
A pivotal trial for the parent company of Instagram and Facebook kicked off in a California federal court Tuesday, with four states seeking billions of dollars in damages as well as fundamental changes to how Meta runs its platforms.
A jury will decide whether the states’ attorneys general have made their case that the tech giant designed its apps to “hook the users, hold them for as long as they can, harvest their data and hide the truth from the public,” as Megan O’Neill, a deputy attorney general for the California Department of Justice, put it in her opening statement. …
US states accuse Meta of covering up research on teen social media addiction in pivotal trial
State attorneys general claim tech company intentionally designed addictive products that harm young people
(The Guardian) Lawyers representing 29 US states have accused Meta of covering up internal research showing Instagram was addictive for teenagers. In a packed courtroom Tuesday, on the opening day of a landmark legal challenge, they said the company knew its products harmed children but hid that information from the public.
“I heard from many of you at jury selection that the health and wellbeing of kids is a shared responsibility,” said Megan O’Neill, a deputy attorney general for California, in her opening statements. “Meta didn’t do its share.”
O’Neill told jurors that she would be giving them a preview of what they could expect to see over the course of the trial, which would include witness testimony and internal documents the attorneys general uncovered while investigating the social media company.
She referenced one document that said, “the young ones are the best ones”, along with another where Meta stated: “Teens are hooked despite how it makes them feel. Instagram is addictive.”
Meta heads to court in a landmark trial about kids and social media addiction
(NPR) Meta will head into federal court on Tuesday to fend off accusations from a group of state attorneys general that it designed its social media platforms to hook children, lied to the public about the risks those platforms posed and gathered data on kids in violation of the law.
The case is the latest in a wave of suits against social media companies, meant to hold them accountable for the way they design their products. Legal experts compare it to landmark litigation against tobacco and opioid manufacturers that changed those companies’ behaviors as well as the public discussion about the risks of cigarettes and prescription painkillers.

China Wants to Shape What the World’s A.I. Knows
China is exporting more than A.I. models. It wants its data to influence the world’s chatbots, raising fears that Beijing’s narratives will spread with the technology.
(NYT) When ChatGPT was still a new technology, researchers in Beijing tested how well it handled Chinese-language questions. Their response to its results was telling.
… ChatGPT has since been updated many times; it is unclear how the results would differ now. But the examples pointed to a central concern in China’s quest to become an artificial intelligence power: The systems shaping the future are being trained on data sets that are overwhelmingly in English, and reflect what China sees as a Western way of thinking.
That imbalance is also a strategic vulnerability for the Chinese Communist Party because it means Western views are likely to prevail when it comes to issues like human rights and the status of Taiwan, the self-governed island claimed by Beijing, analysts say.
To fix this gap, and to build more powerful A.I. tools, Beijing wants to become a leading supplier of data — the troves of text, images and videos — that train A.I. systems around the world.

As the midterms approach, our tests reveal that popular chatbots challenge conspiracy theories. Still, they offer users the ability to create deceitful images, audio, and video.

Zuckerberg: AI’s biggest risk is one entity with too much control
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg released a full-throated defense of AI on Monday morning: a 6,500-word manifesto arguing that the most common concerns are overblown and fail to account for all the positives it can achieve.
(Axios) In his vision of AI, the biggest risk instead is that one government or entity has too much power over the technology.
Why it matters: Zuckerberg’s flag in the ground, with a utopian vision of a highly personal AI that fuels individual achievement, comes as policymakers debate how much control they should have over increasingly powerful models.
The big picture: Even as the world confronts AI that is breaking out of sandboxes, comparing notes on message boards and creating new viruses, Zuckerberg portrays it instead as an analog to other disruptive technical innovations.
“Humanity has witnessed many transformative advances,” he writes in the manifesto. “Each time there is fear that people will be left behind. But each time humanity has come out with more people sharing greater prosperity, health, and freedom.”
“We believe this will be true with AI as well, and the abundance of the future can be shared by everyone,” he says. “We also believe that the values that got us to this point — like liberty, open inquiry, free enterprise, and equal opportunity — are also the right values to build a positive future.”
Threat level: Zuckerberg contrasts this vision with one in which only some people, some businesses or some countries have access to the most powerful AI, suggesting that would represent a far more dangerous outcome.

China’s AI Blitz Creates ‘Death Zone’ for Rival US Model Makers
(Bloomberg) A flurry of model launches from China’s AI sector is rapidly narrowing the gap with Silicon Valley and creating what’s been described as a death zone for anyone without frontier-pushing technology or market-breaking pricing.
Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. became the latest in a parade of Chinese debuts hitting the top of global benchmarks with its Qwen3.8-Max this week, its most advanced model to date that appeared to match or exceed Anthropic PBC’s flagship Fable 5. Two weeks earlier, Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 showed performance comparable to the priciest US options built on a much humbler budget, sparking fresh questions over the effectiveness of US chip sanctions intended to slow China’s tech ascent.
White House Readies A.I. Framework to Review Security Risks
The voluntary review process will cover closed-source artificial intelligence models, but exclude those that publish the underlying code.
(NYT) The A.I. models the government plans to review are known as “closed” models, which do not publish their underlying code and are made by companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, according to three of the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the details of the meeting were private.
The administration does not plan to review “open source” A.I. models, which have computer code available to the public to download and modify, although that could change as the technology advances, the people said.
The moves are an effort by the Trump administration to take a more hands-on approach to regulating A.I., and they formalize oversight of leading A.I. labs like OpenAI and Anthropic. But they delay addressing some of the most pressing regulatory issues with the technology, including potential threats posed by increasingly powerful open-source models made by Chinese companies.

(Reuters) – Meta, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google have been invited to meet White House officials on Tuesday to discuss voluntary government safety testing for the most advanced U.S. AI models, according to three sources familiar with the matter and news reports.
Anthropic and OpenAI disclosed in recent days that their AI tools breached the systems of other companies, stirring concerns among U.S. lawmakers about whether increasingly capable AI models could be used to conduct or facilitate cyberattacks.
A White House official said on Monday the Trump administration has finalized the details of voluntary cybersecurity tests to measure the hacking capabilities of the most advanced American AI models, and is planning to discuss them with the AI industry.
A group of 15 Republican state attorneys general on Monday asked OpenAI to preserve all potentially relevant documents related to its disclosure that its AI system escaped containment and hacked AI company Hugging Face. Citing a Reuters report that the rogue agent in one case left notes for how future versions of itself could escape internal guardrails, they wrote that the company may have violated state consumer protection laws.

The greatest danger posed by AI is not the technology itself, but the race to deploy it before we know how to control it. The recent Hugging Face breach shows how seemingly minor human errors can be amplified by AI, underscoring the risks of treating safety as an afterthought.
(Project Syndicate) The AI race between the United States and China is accelerating at a breathtaking pace. Time and again, the US has appeared to pull ahead, only to see China quickly close the gap.
At the heart of this competition lie two contrasting visions of how AI should be developed and deployed. While US firms largely rely on proprietary technologies to maintain their competitive advantage, China has increasingly embraced open-source AI, making advanced models widely available to developers around the world.
Different strategies notwithstanding, both countries are locked in an arms race which neither side is willing to slow. As speed becomes the overriding priority, safety increasingly takes a back seat, despite the uncomfortably high risk of catastrophic failure arising from the combination of human error and superintelligent AI.
