BRAVO BRIAN! More on Brian
We are truly delighted by the news that Brian Mitchell has been appointed to the Board of Directors of CBC — and dismayed that the Minister’s office did not list Brian’s relevant accomplishments and qualifications, rather than citing affiliations with organisations with which he has little or nothing to do today. Therefore, we have added our own notes from his official bio.

Appointments to Board of Directors of CBC/Radio-Canada
OTTAWA, February 22, 2008 – The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, today announced the appointments of, Linda Black, Mary McNeil, and Brian Mitchell to the Board of Directors of CBC/Radio-Canada.
“The varied backgrounds and experiences of these three individuals will be great assets to the Board of CBC/Radio-Canada,” said Minister Verner.
Ms. Black holds a bachelor of laws degree from Dalhousie University and a master of laws degree from the University of Ottawa. She has worked in various senior executive government roles and served as the founding general counsel at the University of Calgary. Ms. Black is currently a member of the Alberta Secretariat for Action on Homelessness, a member of the Law Enforcement Review Board of Alberta, and governor for the Board of Governors of Mount Royal College.
Ms. McNeil is currently the president and chief executive officer of the BC Cancer Foundation, an independent charitable organization that raises funds to support research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency. She is a member of the Fundraising Program Advisory Committee at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, a member of the Board of the Vancouver Children’s Choir, and a member and past chair of the YWCA’s Inner Circle Committee.
Mr. Mitchell, a lawyer by profession, is founder and managing partner of the law firm Mitchell Gattuso. He plays an active role in various associations and on the boards of a number of community, cultural, and social organizations, including the Westmount Municipal Association, the Georgeville Community Association, St. Michael’s Mission, and the Infinit Theatre. …

Further notes from Brian’s bio indicate far more clearly why he is an excellent choice for the CBC Board, where we know he will bring all of his intellect, lawyerly skills and enthusiasm to bear, not to mention his glorious sense of humour.
Perhaps most important to note is his international background. He has traveled extensively in Europe, particularly to Ireland, England, France and Germany, and has also visited or lived in Kenya, Tanzania and Nepal.
Brian’s higher education reflects his internationalism:
McGill University, Faculty of Law, National Program;
Harvard University
(A.B. 1981)
Université de Paris IV, Institut d’études politiques
His professional and community service has been and is wide-ranging, notably he is serving or has served as President and/or a member of the Board of
St. Michael’s Mission; Montreal, President, Irish Protestant Benevolent Society; Montreal, Quebec, C.A.R.E. (Centre d’Activités Récréatives et Éducatives) Program; St. Patrick’s Society; Ireland-Canada Chamber of Commerce;
and reflecting his love of drama, along with dedication to English-language theatre: Geordie Theatre Productions; InfiniTheatre, Centaur Theatre; Bulldog Theatre Productions.
